Premium / Private-Pay Vision Correction

Tired of squinting at your phone, avoiding night driving, and feeling like your vision is quietly taking parts of your life away?

See The Road, Your Dashboard, Your Phone, And The Details Your Life Depends On Without Waiting Until Cataracts Become A Disability.

If you need sharp vision to work, drive, create, read, lead, perform, or stay independent, basic insurance cataract care may not give you the range, clarity, astigmatism correction, and reduced dependence on glasses you actually want. Dr. Audrey Tai's Vision Design process is built for suitable patients who want to take charge before they are forced into a basic, one-zone solution.

Why I Founded Athena Eye Care

Dr. Audrey Tai
After years in high-volume practices, I wanted to create something different

Meet Dr. Audrey Tai

After completing my fellowship at UC Irvine's renowned Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, I worked in large practices where volume often took priority over individual patient care. I watched too many patients receive standard treatments when advanced options could have given them dramatically better vision outcomes.

I founded Athena Eye Care with a clear purpose: to combine specialized expertise in refractive cataract surgery with truly personalized care. Every patient deserves individualized attention and a customized vision plan designed to achieve their best possible outcome, without the constraints of corporate profit pressures.

Today, over 99% of my patients achieve their target vision using advanced lenses and laser technology. My complication rate has remained below 1 in 1,000 for over a decade. I personally follow up with every patient because your vision transformation is too important to delegate to someone else.

To your health,

— Audrey Tai, DO, MS

Your Life Is Not One Distance

Your Vision Plan Should Not Be Either

Dr. Tai explains vision in three real-life zones. A real plan has to account for what you need at each distance, not just whether the cloudy lens can be removed.

Near

Roughly 14 to 16 inches: phone, books, menus, watch, medicine labels, and fine print.

Intermediate

Arm's length: computer screen, dashboard, desktop, kitchen counter, recipes, tools, and the working distance where much of daily life happens.

Distance

Beyond 20 feet: road signs, TV, subtitles, faces across the room, and distance vision for driving.

Insurance-Based Care Covers A Basic Medical Fix. It Does Not Cover Premium Vision Design.

Basic care can remove a medically significant cataract. Premium Vision Design asks a different question: how do we help a suitable patient pursue functional clarity across the distances and demands that matter most?

Basic Insurance Implant

  • One main zone of vision. The other zones are left for glasses, readers, or contacts.
  • Astigmatism may remain uncorrected, leaving shadowing and reduced sharpness.
  • Glasses or readers still do much of the daily work.
  • Medical cataract treatment, not lifestyle vision design.

Athena Vision Design

  • Three-zone analysis across near, intermediate, and distance vision.
  • Astigmatism and optical quality considered during planning.
  • Trifocal, EDOF, or mix-and-match lens strategy based on candidacy.
  • One-eye-at-a-time refinement, with surgeon-led planning, procedure, and follow-up.

How Dr. Tai Matches The Lens Strategy To The Person

Vision Design is the process of deciding what your eyes can support, what your life demands, what your profession requires, and how the first eye responds before the second eye is planned.

Trifocal

When the eye is healthy enough and the patient wants the broadest range, a trifocal lens may be used to support near, intermediate, and distance vision in suitable candidates.

EDOF

Extended depth of focus: a two-zone range that can be better for patients who drive heavily at night, have eye-health considerations, or are extremely particular about sharpness, contrast, or color accuracy.

Mix-And-Match

Dr. Tai may use the same strategy in both eyes or different strategies in each. The dominant and non-dominant eye may be planned differently depending on the patient's goals.

Four Steps From Application To A Personalized Vision Plan

The sequence is built to qualify private-pay fit first, then determine what kind of vision correction is appropriate for your eyes and your life.

1
Step One

Apply For The Consult

Answer the candidacy questions, including whether you understand premium vision correction is not covered by Medicare or insurance.

2
Step Two

Advanced Eye Measurements

Dr. Tai evaluates lens clarity, astigmatism, eye health, dominant eye, profession, lifestyle, and whether your eyes can support premium lens options.

3
Step Three

First-Eye Procedure

For suitable candidates, the procedure is typically about 15 minutes per eye. Dr. Tai usually performs one eye first so the result can guide the second-eye design.

4
Step Four

Fine-Tune The Second Eye

After you experience the first-eye result, Dr. Tai discusses what you like and what you want more of before planning the second eye.

Transforming Vision

Hear directly from patients who transformed their health with our personalized approach. Real stories of real results.

"Just 24 hours after surgery, I felt Gee Whiz, it's just like 110% better. It was a lot easier than I expected."

*Individual results may vary. These testimonials reflect personal experiences and are not intended to guarantee similar outcomes for every patient. Your results will depend on your specific condition and commitment to the treatment plan.

FAQs

Premium Vision Design, answered.

Medicare may cover the medical portion when cataracts are bad enough to qualify. It does not cover the premium vision component: advanced lens planning, broader range of vision, laser or astigmatism correction, or the goal of reducing dependence on glasses.
Because waiting may mean years of compromised vision, and the premium vision component still is not covered once the medical portion qualifies. If you want the basic route, that may be fine. If you want clear functional vision across the zones that matter, the decision is different.
A basic implant may improve the medical problem, but it usually means choosing one main zone and leaving the other zones to glasses, readers, or contacts. It also may not correct astigmatism, which can leave shadowing or reduced sharpness.
Trifocal lenses can support near, intermediate, and distance vision in suitable candidates. EDOF lenses support an extended range, often two of the three zones, and may be better for patients who prioritize night driving, sharpness, contrast, color accuracy, or have certain eye-health considerations.
Light Adjustable Lens can be useful for the right candidate, but it involves more visits, UV protection, light treatments, and a longer adjustment process. Dr. Tai does not make it the default when another lens strategy may reach the patient's goal with less burden.
It is Dr. Tai's commitment to keep working with you when the result is off target and an enhancement is clinically appropriate. It is not a money-back guarantee and not a guarantee of perfect vision.
Because the natural lens is removed, cataracts cannot form in that removed natural lens later. This does not prevent every future eye condition and does not guarantee a specific result.

This Is For Patients Who Want Control, Precision, And A Real Vision Strategy

We want to make sure premium Vision Design is the right fit before you apply.

This Is NOT A Fit If…

  • You are only shopping for the cheapest Medicare-covered or insurance-covered basic cataract option.
  • Your vision frustration is a minor nuisance rather than something affecting your daily life.
  • You expect premium implants, laser planning, or astigmatism correction to be covered by insurance.

This May Be A Fit If…

  • You are particular about clarity, sharpness, contrast, color accuracy, or work precision.
  • Your night driving, reading, computer, dashboard, or phone vision is affected enough that you are ready to act.
  • You value independence and would rather not wait years until your vision qualifies as a medical disability.
  • You are willing to consider private-pay premium vision correction for the right result.
